Woods Visits
At Swanmore Primary we have the almost unique opportunity of having sole use of an area of privately owned woodland, about an hour's walk from school.
Each Key Stage 2 class makes a day visit to Captain Phillimore's Wood at least twice a year, and the children all become very familiar with, and attached to the wood over the four year period. During these visits they follow a programme of activities designed to develop their awareness of and sensitivity to their environment, and the care with which it should be treated. They are also given the opportunity (in complete safety) to experience the sensation of being alone for a short time and to learn to work with others in team building activities. At the end of Year 6 the children's final visit takes the form of a bivouac camp and is their opportunity to bid farewell to the wood before they leave us to go on to Secondary School.
