We have been busy growing our own produce; cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. The produce grown will hopefully be used in a year 6 cooking project. The idea is that our produce will have grown without using harmful pesticides and our food 'air miles' are dramatically reduced by growing produce ourselves. We've grown lots! The surplus produce is being donated into our school larder. Some of our early pickings have already been donated for our local community to collect.
Our next growing project is to generate our very own compost and become a zero food waste school. Check out our Composting Rocket! Along with our pet chicken waste, food waste will be collected from our kitchen and school dinner hall and disposed of carefully into our rocket which in time will turn into compost. Our compost will then be used to enrich the soils we grow our further crops and produce in. Again, any surplus to requirement will be donated to support others that are growing in the community. Composting onsite is the most sustainable way of dealing with green and food waste and converting it onto a precious resource that is rich in nutrition and organic matter and perfect for capturing carbon and improving soil health.
